Choosing trading platforms for a prop firm in 2026
MetaTrader, cTrader, Match-Trader, DXtrade, TradeLocker and the futures stack, compared on what matters to a prop firm: who you can sell to, and what happens when a vendor changes the rules.
Key takeaways
- Platform licences have forced repeated migrations since 2024; one futures firm closed in 2026 citing platform access.
- cTrader restricted new US prop traders from Q1 2026; MetaTrader access for prop firms remains tightly controlled.
- Match-Trader, TradeLocker and DXtrade are the main forex options for firms serving US traders.
- Futures firms need the stack traders expect: Rithmic connectivity and front ends such as Tradovate and NinjaTrader.
- Offer at least two platforms and confirm in writing whose licence you run under.
For a prop firm, the trading platform is not just a feature. It decides which countries you can sell to, which traders will buy, and whether you can keep operating when a vendor changes its terms. Since 2024 more firms have been forced to migrate platforms than at any time before, and in September 2026 a futures firm paying out nearly $700,000 a month closed, citing platform access. This guide compares the main options in 2026 and how to choose between them.
Why platform choice is now a business decision
Three events shaped the market:
- February 2024: the MetaQuotes crackdown. Brokers that “grey-labelled” their MetaTrader licences to prop firms were forced to cut them off, starting with firms that had active US accounts. Finance Magnates noted that MetaQuotes earns from live servers but not from the demo servers prop firms use for simulated trading (Finance Magnates).
- Q1 2026: cTrader restricts US traders. After an internal regulatory assessment, Spotware decided to restrict the onboarding of US-based traders. FundedNext, The5ers and Goat Funded Trader all limited cTrader to non-US clients (Finance Magnates).
- September 2026: FundedSeat closes. The futures firm said it lacked NinjaTrader and Tradovate and that MetaTrader was ruled out by licensing terms, so it could not grow fast enough (Finance Magnates).
Forex and CFD platforms
MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5
Still the platforms most retail traders know, with the largest library of indicators and expert advisors. Access for prop firms is now tightly controlled. Some firms have returned by obtaining their own licence: Instant Funding, for example, brought MT5 back in 2025 after getting its own “main label” licence, having used DXtrade and cTrader in between (Finance Magnates). In September 2026 Finance Magnates named FTMO, which owns the broker OANDA, as a prop firm still offering MetaTrader 5 to US traders (Finance Magnates). It is the exception, not the rule.
Best for: non-US audiences that expect MetaTrader, where your provider can show a valid licensing route.
cTrader
cTrader from Spotware was the main beneficiary of the 2024 MetaQuotes changes. The5ers, for example, moved to it. Since Q1 2026 it is effectively a non-US option for prop firms (Finance Magnates). Traders like its clean interface, depth of market and cBots for automation.
Best for: international audiences, especially traders moving from MetaTrader who want a professional desktop and web platform.
Match-Trader
Match-Trader from Match-Trade Technologies is built with prop firms in mind and has become a default US-friendly option. After the cTrader change, FundedNext directs US traders to Match-Trader, and Goat Funded Trader uses it for US clients (Finance Magnates). Match-Trade says its technology is used by more than 70 prop firms and supports over $100 million in monthly challenge volume, and it now offers a fully managed launch model (Finance Magnates).
Best for: firms that need a single platform for both US and international traders, and fast, browser-based onboarding.
DXtrade
DXtrade, from Devexperts, picked up a “migration wave” of prop firms in February 2024, including The Funded Trader, Swift Funding, Lark Funding and For Traders (Finance Magnates). It is a mature, broker-grade platform with strong web and mobile apps.
Best for: firms that want an institutional-grade platform with a long track record in brokerage.
TradeLocker
TradeLocker launched in 2023 and grew quickly among prop firms after the MetaQuotes changes. Top Tier Trader moved its whole business to it in February 2024. It now lists more than 60 partner brokers and prop firms. Eightcap became the first major regulated CFD broker to add it in early 2026, and TradeLocker opened a free demo to all users in May 2026 (Finance Magnates). It is built around TradingView charts.
Best for: younger, mobile-first traders who already chart on TradingView.
NuTrader
NuTrader is a newer platform offered within some white-label prop stacks, including ours. It is less known to traders than the options above, so it works best alongside at least one familiar platform rather than as your only choice.
Futures platforms
Futures prop is the fastest-growing part of the market, and it runs on a different stack. Exchange data and order routing come through connectivity providers such as Rithmic, while traders use front ends such as Tradovate, NinjaTrader and others. Tradovate and NinjaTrader are what many futures traders expect: FundedSeat named the lack of both as a key reason it closed (Finance Magnates).
New options keep arriving. FPFX added Tickblaze as a platform choice for prop firms in September 2026 (Finance Magnates), and CFD-first firms such as FTMO, The5ers and FundedNext launched futures products in 2026 (Finance Magnates). Futures also brings exchange obligations: firms with live traders are expected to monitor for practices such as wash trading that CME expects regulated participants to watch for (Finance Magnates).
Best for: any firm targeting US traders or day traders of index, energy and metals futures.
TradingView as the front end
Many traders now want to trade from the charts they already use. FTMO has offered challenge trading from TradingView through its OANDA unit since 2025, and Eightcap added its prop challenges to TradingView in July 2026, giving qualifying traders a free TradingView Plus subscription (Finance Magnates). Platforms with TradingView integration, such as Match-Trader and TradeLocker, give smaller firms a version of the same experience.

How to choose: a five-question checklist
- Where are your traders? If more than a small share are in the US, you need Match-Trader, TradeLocker, DXtrade or futures platforms. cTrader and most MetaTrader routes are out.
- What do they trade? Forex and gold traders expect MetaTrader-style platforms; index futures traders expect Tradovate, NinjaTrader or Rithmic-connected tools.
- What do they already use? Look at your audience. If your content is built on TradingView charts, pick a platform with TradingView integration.
- Can you switch? Ask your provider how accounts, history and open challenges move between platforms, and how long it took the last time a client had to migrate.
- Who holds the licence? Get in writing whose licence your platform runs under, and what happens to your traders if that licence is withdrawn.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best trading platform for a prop firm in 2026?
There is no single best platform. For international forex audiences, MetaTrader 5 and cTrader remain popular where licensing allows. For US traders, Match-Trader, TradeLocker and DXtrade are the main forex options, and futures firms rely on Rithmic connectivity with front ends such as Tradovate. Most firms should offer at least two.
Can prop firms offer MetaTrader to US traders?
Rarely. Since MetaQuotes tightened licensing in 2024, most prop firms stopped offering MetaTrader to US traders. FTMO, which owns the broker OANDA, is a notable exception: Finance Magnates reported in 2026 that it offers MetaTrader 5 to US traders.
Does cTrader still work for prop firms?
Yes, for non-US traders. After a Q1 2026 internal regulatory assessment, Spotware restricted onboarding of US-based traders, and several large prop firms limited cTrader to non-US clients.
Which platforms do futures prop firms use?
Futures prop firms typically use Rithmic for exchange connectivity and data, with front ends such as Tradovate and NinjaTrader. Newer options include Tickblaze and Volumetrica.
